Back to School Apple Cupcakes

by Party Cupcake Ideas on September 16, 2010

Thank you Katrina for sending us these amazing back to school cupcakes. These apple cupcakes are so cute and make a great treat to celebrate the start of a new school year!! Mix your favorite yellow or white cupcake batter and pour into red paper baking cups. Bake the cupcakes according to the recipe and let them cool. Cover the tops with a white frosting. Then dip each cupcake top into a bowl of red sanding sugar. Place a Tootsie roll into the center of the cupcake as a stem. For the leaf I used a sour apple gummy tape which I cut into the shape of a leaf. I also made a miniature version of these apple cupcakes using a small cupcake pan and I used a pretzel stick for the stem instead of the Tootsie roll for a healthier option. These are a great size for the younger kids.

Wednesday 5 – Back to School Cupcakes!

by Sprinkles on August 25, 2010

Ahhhhh, back to school time for the kiddies, or maybe it is their first year at school!  Whatever year they are returning too, there is only one way to truly mark the occasion and that is with a cupcake, so this week we are breaking all the rules and instead of bringing your 5 recipes on a certain theme, today we are bringing you five visual creations, plus with our 25 Sugar Free Cupcakes last weekend and the 25 Vegan cupcakes the week before we thought you may like a more visual inspiration today!

1. School Supplies

The first cupcakes are the school supplies, no first day is complete without having your books, ruler, brain food and crayons (though perhaps the latter can be left off for high school kids!).  Glorious Treats created these banana cupcakes for her homeschool co-op and they turned out fantastic!

2. A, B, C Cupcake Toppers

At the Cupcake Project, they feature a fun idea for making fun and decorative cupcake toppers.  A = Apple, B = Banana and C = Carrot.  They have even provided a great recipe for your back to school cuppies.

3. Back to School

Sinful Southern Sweets has a fantastic mini back to school cupcake idea which features little chocolate covered Graham Crackers as the chalk board and bright yellow icing.  The apple is a red skittle or M&M, depending on what you fancy!

4. Apple Cupcakes

Why not take your new teacher an apple, but ditch the healthy heart happy style and take her one of these fabulous cupcake ones instead.  Calm in the Kitchen created these in both red and green!

5. Chalkboard Cupcakes

Our final one today comes from FancyFlours Blog and is of the most adorable little chalkboard I have found.  I am not sure if the fact that it is surrounded by colorful sprinkles is what makes it so good.

Hopefully we have inspired you!  Even if school did go back for you a week or two ago, you can still always find an excuse to bake!  Speaking of which it apparently is cultural diversity day at my partner’s work tomorrow, so I am making cupcakes.  The cultural diversity will have to come in the way they are decorated as I don’t think anyone will like Vegemite cupcakes!

Decorating Cupcakes At School

At some point in every parent’s life, they will likely be called upon to provide the class with some sort of snack or treat. Decorating cupcakes at school make the perfect solution for in class snacking. Whether the class is big or small, cupcakes are a quick and easy option that can satisfy a variety of tastes.

Cost

For many parents, cost is certainly one concern when asked to provide an entire classroom full of students with a snack. Cupcakes are an economical option. Whether you buy them from a bakery or make them at home, this is a snack that usually will cost less than many other choices.

Ease

Another reason cupcakes for school are a good choice is because of how easy they are both to transport and to serve. Rather than having to slice a cake, each student can simply choose a cupcake. No plates or forks required!

Variety

Not all students will like the same flavors. Rather than limiting them to just one flavor, if you bring cupcakes to school you can offer the students a variety of flavor choices. Of course, some parents see wisdom in keeping the choices rather limited just to make serving time a bit easier. Others, however, go all out and offer several flavors from which the students can choose.

Health Concerns

In every classroom there is bound to be at least one student with special dietary needs. Whether the student has celiac disease, diabetes or comes from a strictly vegan home, he is likely to often be left out of many treats that involve food.

If you bring cupcakes to school, however, you can include nearly every student, even those with special dietary considerations. Just ask the teacher ahead of time if any students in the class have any such needs. If so, simply order a couple of cupcakes that meet the need, such as being gluten free or made without any animal related products.

This will allow the student to be part of the celebration and enjoy the same snack as the other children.

There are few snacks besides cupcakes that offer such diversity and can be easily made to accommodate a variety of needs.

When you bring cupcakes to school, there are some ways to make it extra special. For example, you could have the cupcakes decorated in the school colors. Another idea is to set up a “decoration bar” where the students can add sprinkles or candies to their already frosted cupcakes. Of course, this will not be appropriate in every situation, but it is one option if time will allow.

You could also talk to the teacher about placing a sticker on the bottom of the wrappers of one or two of the cupcakes. The students who get those cupcakes could win a small prize, such as a puzzle or a game.

Those are just a couple of ways to make bringing cupcakes to school a little bit more memorable and fun, both for you and for the students.

The next time you are asked to bring a snack to school, think cupcakes. They are a quick and easy snack that can be made to suit a variety of tastes and special dietary requirements. On top of that, cupcakes are just a whole lot of fun!
