Making Olympic ring cupcakes was fun and easy with the help of my kids. They wanted to use colorful cereal like Apple Jacks to create the Olympic rings. Instead of frosting, they decided to use fruit roll ups. We used a cookie cutter and carefully pressed firmly and with a twisting motion to score the fruit roll up. I found it easier to remove the fruit around the circle first. The kids also thought of using Cheerio’s, but they were not as colorful as Apple Jack’s. So many fun cereals can be used for decorating cupcakes, it’s hard to decide on just one.

I’ve been watching the Olympics over the last week and I’m fascinated by the sport of curling. I think it’s the concentration and strategy that impresses me most and also listening to the athletes communicate with one another. I was inspired today to try and make some Olympic curling cupcakes as I stared at the tv while working out at the gym. The circular targets remind me of cupcakes as the camera took shots from above the ice rink. Some people might see targets and I see cupcakes…yum! My kids helped with the decorations and also choosing what to use for the curling stone and broom. It was fun family time making cupcakes.
I baked vanilla cupcakes and as they were cooling I started to roll out my fondant. I used a round cookie cutter to cut the circular curling target.

I used the 2″ round cookie cutter to mark the second target ring.

Kids helped by using Wilton food safe markers to draw targets.

Kids picked chose round yogurt snacks for the curling stone.

Kids helped add curling handles to the stone and also making the curling broom. They chose a pez candy for the broom and rolled fondant for the broom handle.

My family had fun making these Olympic curling cupcakes and they only took about 30 minutes to make. See what fun items your kids can find in the cupboard to create edible curling stone and brooms. Some other ideas that my 3 year old wanted to use included Cheerio’s and Skittles.
