Cupcake Wars

Unfortunately there is not much news around this week, but we did have a good Australia Day!  And there is more celebration on the way with Valentines Day just around the corner!

Wednesday 26th January – Happy Australia Day!

Thursday 27th January – Cupcakes are due to hit the streets of Denver again in the next few weeks as the City Council works to clear up the confusion that surrounded the mobile food license issue.  Owners such as Denon Moore from Let Them Eat Cake had consigned their vans to the garage in an effort to protect their staff from city officials.  This is good news for all – more info at 9 news.

Saturday 29th January – Everyone wants to know the secret of decorating Cupcake War winning cupcakes!  Dorothy Tong, winner of Cupcake Wars’ free program at the Thousand Oaks Library generated so much interest that some visitors had to be turned away.

Sunday 30th January – Get crafty, cupcake and valentine style, but not with baking cupcakes!  Babble has a great craft guide if you want to get your glue gun workin!

The big question this week is… pies or cupcakes… pies or cupcakes…

the answer.. CUPCAKES of course!  You just can’t decorate a pie like you can a cupcake!

Tuesday 11th January – Save the Denver Cupcake Trucks!  If you believe that cupcakes have a place on the streets of Denver, then you have the ability to make a difference and sign the official petition to help save Clyde and Clementine, the two trucks which have been parked since late last year.  Why?  Well it seems the owners cannot get a straight answer from the Department of Excise and Licenses.  More information is on Denver Westword.

Wednesday 12th January – Got what it takes to bake a cupcake or two?  Then how about considering auditioning for Season 3 of Food Network’s Cupcake Wars.  Reality Wanted has details of how to go about creating your entry.

Saturday 15th January – Is the cupcake business a viable one?  It is an interesting question and one that has been asked a few times by many people and companies.  The New York Times You’re the Boss Blog asked the question back in November 2009 and received  wildly divergent opinions, but given the success and expansion of Crumb’s Bake Shop, they have decided to ask again.  So if you have an opinion or would like to see what the answers were last time they asked, check out You’re the Boss here.

Saturday 15th January - Bye bye cupcakes – hello pies?

In Australia the ‘pies’ may have won the premiership, but are the edible version really posing a treat to the popularity of cupcakes?  LA Times Blog ponders the issue.  Apparently pie shops are springing up everywhere and pie has even replaced cake at some weddings.  What do you think, will a piece of pie replace your cupcake?

Winning Vegan Cupcake Recipes

by Sprinkles on September 7, 2010

Chloe Coscarelli amazes judges on Cupcake Wars with her Vegan cupcakes. Image sourced from NY Times

A while ago, we brought you a list of amazing Vegan Cupcake recipes.  We included 25 recipes in our list from all over the internet, but there was one notable absence, and that was that we didn’t bring you any recipes created by Chef Chloe Coscarelli.

If you think the name sounds familiar, you are correct, Chloe was the winner of Cupcake Wars with her Vegan cupcakes.  She surprised many people not least the judges who were skeptical about the Vegan cupcake competing against the standard eggs and butter cupcakes.  Journalist Tara Parker-Pope traces Chloe’s journey in an article in the NY Times about not only cupcakes but the gaining popularity of Vegan Food that is not only good, but often better than our traditional foods.

So if you are keen to try some Vegan cupcakes that are quite possibly better than the competition, here are the links to Chef Chloe’s cupcake recipes. Most are on her blog but one is in VegNews:

* Raspberry Tiramisu Cupcakes

* Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake Cupcakes

* Fluffy Coconut Cupcakes

* Creme-filled Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

Of course you can find lots of other fantastic Vegan recipes on Chef Chloe’s blog here.
