Make A+ Kids Birthday Cupcakes

by Abigail on August 12, 2010

Looking at the calendar we see it’s August. This means one thing for families: Back to School season is up us. So many things to plan and prepare for. And we’re about to add one more to think about: those sweet birthday cupcakes you bring to school for your child’s birthday.

It’s a tradition for many children to bring a sweet treat to school to share for their birthday. Or perhaps there is a single celebration for all the children for the birthday month and some of the families bring something. We know if you love cupcakes – you’ll want to bring some sweet and yummy cupcakes to share with your child’s friends that will go straight to the Head of the Class. Here are some A+ ideas for kids birthday cupcakes!

Make birthday cupcakes age appropriate. If you love making fancy cupcakes – some of you may be tempted to use creative ingredients to get these fun effects. Some children may be curious to eat them and others simply wont. Especially with young children, they are less likely to try something they don’t recognize. Try keeping your kids’ birthday cupcakes age appropriate and avoid using ingredients that a child can’t recognize. Let them know what tops the cupcake (sprinkles, cereal, licorice) so they can decide if this is something they will pop into their mouths.

Ask the teacher about food allergies or dietary restrictions. Some children have food allergies or dietary restrictions. It’s important to know about these before bringing any treat to school. The best option is to offer an alternative for the children who can’t eat a cupcake so they can enjoy a treat. Try asking their parents for good alternative treats if you are uncertain – fruit and pretzels may be good choices for many.

Let the birthday child have some choice in what type of cupcakes you make. These are his or her school friends you are baking for. Giving them the alternative to have you bake clown faced cupcakes or flower designs on cupcakes may be special to them. It gives them something meaningful to share.

Try to make all of the cupcakes the same but add some variety. Doesn’t quite make sense…does it? It’s like this: make them all the same size, with all of the same “goodies.” But consider using different flavors and colors to make the cupcakes even more fun. Make ½ the cupcakes chocolate and ½ vanilla. Use several flavors of frosting to decorate. The children will have fun with the variety. It also means if children don’t “like” chocolate or vanilla, they can easily trade with a school friend and still enjoy the birthday celebration.
