In a few weeks Halloween will be here. That spooky and fun holiday that children and adults look forward to. And if you love cupcakes, this creative holiday is easily one you’ll look forward to with great anticipation. Because anyone knows that just about anything goes on Halloween! So let’s talk a bit about Halloween cupcakes!
Halloween cupcakes are perfect for children and adults. We’ll let you in on a little secret: you can often make your “adult” cupcakes just as cute and silly as your children Halloween themed cupcakes because of this day – no one will raise a frosting covered eyebrow at you. Halloween is the perfect day to be silly, spooky and even a little goofy. So it’s okay to make those great alien cupcakes for your co-workers from Hello Cupcake! You’ve had your eye on all year. They won’t mind – as a matter of fact, they’ll dig in and ask for a second one to take home.
If you are having a Halloween party you want to be sure to have enough Halloween cupcakes. Halloween is often the perfect time to have a party – whether for children or adults. And for both it is known as a day of indulgence in sweet treats. So it is a great day to have some yummy cupcakes. Try making a combination of regular and mini sized cupcakes to please everyone. Especially if some guests are in fancy costumes, they’ll want a petite sized cupcake they can take tiny bites from. But that adorable dinosaur in the corner is going to want to take b-i-g bites from their cupcake! So be prepared.
Hello Cupcake! has pumpkin themed cupcakes that are perfect to make. I can also tell you if you are new to making fancy cupcakes this is a great one to start with. Try getting the orange frosting and green licorice ahead of time, as you probably wont be the only one with cupcakes on your mind for Halloween. These pumpkins come out cuter than you can imagine – and as a mini cupcake they are really cute too.
A variety of cupcakes is often a good option for Halloween. Children today seem to hold more Halloween parties and no longer go trick or treating. If your children are going to a Halloween party, you can offer to bring cupcakes and the host will be pleased at your kind offer. Try a variety of cupcakes from flowers to wild colors and fun shapes. Just as every child has a different idea of the “best” Halloween costume, they also have a different idea of what makes a great cupcake. They will appreciate having lots of cupcakes to choose from.

Image from The Frosted Cake n Cookie
Well it is officially the first day of Autumn, so that is good enough for me to let you know of a fantastic website I have just recently found. It is The Frosted Cake ‘n Cookie which is the blog of a stay at home mom who is brilliant at all things cake. I found her last weekend with my pumpkin pie cupcake, but when I went cruising her site, as I do when I have stumbled on something really good, I found that she has these neat little tutorials there.
Two of these tutorials just happen to be PERFECT for Halloween, so in order for you to have plenty of time to practice before the big night in two months, I thought I would post these early!
Witches Hats from the Frosted Cake n Cookie
The first is ‘Pumpkin / Jack ‘o Lantern‘ and the second is ‘Witches Hats‘ which are equally as spectacular.
Both of these come with full instructions of what you need and how to make them. This is the perfect opportunity if you haven’t really played around with fondant before to give it a go and wow the kiddies with your creations.
To see the tutorial for each of these, simply click on either the image or the links above. Happy Halloween baking!

Okay there is one thing I am not sure that I quite understand, that is, we all love little cupcakes because they are so adorable, we can have so much fun with them and they are not going to completely decimate our diets with their calories. So if all this is true, what is with the big cupcakes?
I have seen a heap of these around now and I thought I just had to feature some of my favorite ones on this weeks ‘Five of’ post! But tell me, what do you think of the big cupcake? Have you made one?
1. The princess giant birthday cupcake
This absolutely gorgeous cake was created by Peggy’s Cupcakes and is just so pretty! I love the mix of frosting and hard icing flowers on this one.
2. Blue and spotty giant cupcake
The cupcake by Steph on her blog is very well done. She did this one for a man, but I think it shows how you could make excellent mushroom style cupcakes. You would have to carve down the inside a little, but it would look brilliant. Potentially it would become unstable, but hey, it is art!
3. The love cake
I really like this one too, it is a super cute chocolate cake which is covered in chocolate buttercream and decorated with piped icing hearts. The Knife blog got this cool cupcake from La Provence in Beverly Hills.
4. The Christmas giant cupcake
Move over humble Christmas pudding, no one wants your fiery brandy goodness no more! This red bow and ribbon cake is the new centerpiece, but according to the Get Your Coat blog, learning how to ice this well may yet stand in your way!
5. Spoooooooky Ghost Halloween giant cupcake
If we have covered birthdays, valentines day and Christmas, we couldn’t forget Halloween!
This awesome cupcake is from Wilton, but we found the great design on All Things Cupcake!
So that rounds out another five of, what did you think of these big cupcakes, are you going to make one soon? There apparently is a trick to making these cupcake cakes a success. A lot of people have had issues with the middle not cooking properly or it ‘sinking’. This is not because the mixture is wrong (in most cases) but because your oven is set too high cooking the outside, but not the inside. Adjust your heat down to a lower setting and cook the cupcake cake for longer.
