Decorating Cupcakes At Your Local Bakery

Parents are often looking for creative outings on which to take their children. How about a day spent decorating cupcakes at a local bakery? Any outing that includes creativity and lots of frosting is one that most kids are going to love. As a bonus, it is a relatively inexpensive way to while away an afternoon.

Not all bakeries offer the chance for such a hands-on experience, but if you call around, you might find one in your area that does. Keep in mind that this is not a cake decorating class, but just a chance for the kids to decorate some cupcakes with all of the tools available at a professional bakery.

Typically, you will have to pay for the items used as well as for the time of the staff who works with your children. There is no one price fits all for this type of experience. The cost will vary from bakery to bakery.

When planning a day at the bakery, be sure to ask the right questions such as those below.

What, exactly, is included in the price of the experience?

Can extra cupcakes be purchased to be included?

Is any type of guidance or supervision provided by staff, or is that entirely up to the parents?

A day spent decorating cupcakes at the bakery is one of those very rare outings that will be equally enjoyed by kids of various ages. While the younger kids are smearing every color frosting that they can find on their cupcakes, the older kids can be carefully decorating using cut out fondant shapes and other tools.

For children who do show an interest in baking, this is a great starting point as no real baking is involved. Instead, the children will just have the chance to decorate cupcakes that are already prepared.

Of course, the next natural step would be some type of cake decorating or baking class. Those classes are more expensive and time consuming than the day at the bakery idea. For that reason, it makes sense to see how much they seem to enjoy this experience before moving onto the more in depth classes.

This type of outing may even be appropriate for children with special dietary needs such as those with diabetes or celiac disease. If you notify the bakery ahead of time, you may be able to get gluten free or sugar free cupcakes for your child to decorate.

This will be a great way to help a child who may normally feel left out of food related activities to take part in the same event as all the other kids. Just be sure that the frosting and other items used to decorate his cupcake also meet his dietary needs.

To make the day extra special, consider having chef’s hats or aprons made that bear your child’s name. This is also a fun idea for a birthday party for a small group of children. It is a unique way to spend the day and one that your child is likely to remember for a long time to come.

The best part? You won’t have to worry about dessert that night!

Saying Thank You With Cupcakes

by Party Cupcake Ideas on February 26, 2010

Thank You Cupcakes

Sarah at Abigail’s Bake Shop designed these beautiful “Thank You” cupcakes and reminded me to be thinking about ways to share my love of baking and showing appreciation. Teachers, nurses, doctors, friends, are just a few of the people you can say thanks with a thoughtful cupcake treat. I know my kids want to visit a local fire station, and wouldn’t it be fun to bake some cupcakes for the firefighters as a way of saying thanks. You don’t even have to bake an entire batch of cupcakes. One cupcake with a fun message of appreciation will be remembered.

Have you ever made a special thank you cupcake for someone?
